Abstract (please use no less than 300 words to describe your proposal)

The Wikimedia Foundation and the Collaborative Creativity Group at UNU-MERIT [a joint research and training centre of United Nations University (UNU) and Maastricht University] collaborated to conduct the first-ever, comprehensive Wikipedia survey. With this survey, which was conducted worldwide in several languages, the Wikimedia Foundation hopes to build a similar understanding of Wikipedia. The first results of this survey were presented at Wikimania 2008 in Alexandria, Egypt.

We will present an overview of the final results of the first global Wikipedia Survey. The dataset that has been used for this overview report contains 176,192 cases. In this presentation we will focus on topics such as:

  • Wikipedia contributors and non-contributors and their demographics, motivations and incentives.
  • Quality dimensions of Wikipedia (also compared to a conventional encyclopaedia)
  • Reasons for not contributing
  • Relationship with other Wikimedia projects, such as Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks and Wikisource
  • Useful formats for the provision of Wikipedia information
  • Motivation to donate to the Wikimedia Foundation
