The vision of a Semantic Wikipedia was first presented at the inaugural Wikimania in Frankfurt, and during the last few months there have been major steps towards realizing the vision. This panel will introduce Semantic MediaWiki, offer an update on the software and related extensions as well as on the status of the current Semantic MediaWiki community, and then present and discuss the current plans towards realizing a Semantic Wikipedia.
Semantic MediaWiki (SMW) is a free, open-source extension to MediaWiki – the wiki software that powers Wikipedia – that lets you store and query data within the wiki's pages. It is also a full-fledged framework, in conjunction with many spinoff extensions, that can turn a wiki into a powerful and flexible “collaborative database”. All data created within SMW can easily be published via the Semantic Web, allowing other systems to use this data seamlessly. SMW allows for annotating semantic data within wiki pages, thus turning a wiki that incorporates the extension into a semantic wiki. Data that has been encoded can be used in semantic searches, used for aggregation of pages, displayed in formats like maps, calendars and graphs, and exported to the outside world via formats like RDF, JSON, or CSV. We will give a quick introduction in the concepts behind Semantic MediaWiki, and provide a few example use cases demonstrating the power of the technology. SMW has its own conference by now, two times a year. We will give a report on the latest developments in the Semantic MediaWiki community, the current issues, and promising use cases.
The second topic of the panel is to return to the original vision of a Semantic Wikipedia, and how it can be realized. Lately they have been a number of meetings involving numerous stakeholders in the topic, culminating in a two day workshop in Sebastopol, CA. We will report on the results of the workshop and the current plans and progress towards implementation.
